Avodart is a drug used for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate.
Avodart acts by preventing the conversion of testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is involved in the development of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
The drug can be taken with food or in empty stomach. Take Avodart with a full glass of water. The drug should only be swallowed and not chewed, broken or crushed. If the capsule is broken or crushed, it can irritate your mouth, lips and throat. While taking the drug, you should have to follow your doctor’s direction; never take large amounts or take less of the drug as it can be risky.
Once you start using Avodart, do not discontinue the drug even if you do not see any improvement in the beginning. May be it can take about six months for your symptoms to improve. Stopping the drug in the middle of a course only increase the risk of side effects.
In case you miss a Avodart dose, there is nothing to worry. Take the capsule as soon as you remember it. But you should not take the missed dose if it is time for taking your scheduled dose. Take care that you d not mix two doses of Avodart. If you suspect an overdose, you have to contact your doctor immediately.
Before the doctor prescribes Avodart, you have to tell him about all your medical conditions. Better tell him if you have any allergies to any particular food, medicine or any substance, including the ingredients of Avodart. Inform your doctor if you have allergies to medicines known as finasteride.
The medicine is only for men and should never be taken by women and children. Pregnant women and those who hope to get pregnant should never come in contact with Avodart as the drug is absorbed through the skin. The skin is known to cause birth defects. Breast-feeding mothers should also avoid taking Avodart as the drug is traced in breast milk. If women and children accidentally come in contact with the drug, they should have to immediately wash their hands with some detergent.
Once you have taken Avodart, you should not donate blood for at least 6 months as the drug can be carried in the blood and this could by accident transfused into some pregnant women.
Just like other medicines, Avodart also interacts with certain drugs. Therefore, it is better to inform your doctor about all the medications, including the prescriptive/non-prescriptive medicines, diet supplements and herbal medicines, that you are taking so that he will be able to decide on the medications.
Avodart also come with allergic reactions and also side effects. If you come across allergic reactions like difficulty breathing, hives and swelling of the face, tongue, lips or throat, stop the drug and immediately contact your physician. Somme of the lesser known side effects that come with Avodart are impotency, decreased sex drive, decreased amount of semen and breast tenderness.
